Food You Hate to Love–Bacon Explosion!
11/08/09 • Categorized as All Features
When I first heard about the Bacon Explosion internet meme well over a year ago, I knew it was my kind of food. Pound after pound of meat, slathered in BBQ sauce, and wrapped with bacon?!? What wasn’t to love!
Months passed. The recipe quickly took on a near-mythic status in my mind. Surely it was the ultimate dish of scrumptiously unhealthy food. Other friends sent me the link, their online messages dripping with virtual drool. It came up in dinner conversations, lunch outings, car rides…curiously enough, only guys brought up the topic with me…
Finally, after month after month talking about it, I finally put a date on my calendar to make the most Awesome Meal of All Time.
Not wanting to miss a single moment of the experience, I chronicled each and every step (with some photographic assistance from my brother)–and now I’m sharing it with you.
Did the experience live up to the hype and anticipation?

When he’s not clogging his arteries with fat, Josh likes to overpower his eardrums with loud music and squint into cameras.

Josh,
Being a non-eater of meat and one who gets nauseated by the smell and sometimes appearance of pork, (oh and I’m a Jew, so that too) it was slightly difficult for me to read this essay without my stomach turning… but, and I should get a pat on the back, I read it and loved the combination of text with pictures. It was really engaging, and even though I will never make ‘bacon explosion,’ because touching the meat would make me gag, I now know how to instruct someone to do the bacon weaving. Thanks!

Dorie,
I hate pork too.
Consider your pack patted!
Josh
Lol. I think he meant to say your “back” patted, Dorie. And really, I don’t think it matters whether you like meat or not…these pics (and recipe) could make anyone turn away from pork! haha. But I agree, the combination of text and pics is very engaging…and the dog pic is an adorable and welcomed addition!
Definitely meant “back.” Too much bacon to the brain…
I’m not going to lie… I thought it looked good. But I love all kinds of meat. I was even going to say when we workshop, that I would spring for the $17.99 slow-roaster. But I guess, that’s a no?
I agree that the pictures are priceless, esp. the one of Josh wearing his “worried face.” I eat meat in small amounts, but I don’t know if I eat this pork feast. But I still enjoyed the experience of reading about it and seeing it, even if I never taste is. And as for the bacon-weaving, maybe it could be applied to lattice-topped pie crusts or braiding hair.
I’ve got to agree that you’ve really hit on something great with the visual element. Kudos.
